More about Hoodia Gordonii

Oct 06
2010

What is Hoodia?

  • Hoodia gordonii is a cactus-like succulent plant, native to the Kalahari Desert in Southern Africa.
  • Hoodia has received a lot of publicity in recent times for its natural appetite suppressant properties.

How does Hoodia work?

  • The appetite suppressant effects of Hoodia were first observed in 1937 by a Dutch anthropologist studying the primitive San Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert.
  • It was noticed that the nomadic Bushmen, (who call it Xhoba) ate the stem of the Hoodia plant to stave off hunger during long hunting trips in the sparsely vegetated area.
  • The active ingredient in Hoodia is the appetite-suppressing molecule, P57, which is licensed to the British pharmaceutical company Phytopharm who are researching its potential as an anti-obesity drug.
  • Scientists from Phytopharm say P57 acts on the brain in a manner similar to glucose. It tricks the brain into thinking you are full even when you have not eaten, reduces interest in food and delays the time before hunger sets in.

Who should not take Hoodia?

  • Do not take Hoodia without first talking to your doctor if you have
  • diabetes,
  • heart disease or high blood pressure,
  • a bleeding or blood clotting disorder,
  • anorexia, bulimia or any other eating disorder.
  • Talk to your doctor before taking Hoodia if you have any other medical conditions, allergies (especially to plants), or if you take other medicines or herbal/ health supplements.
  • Do not take Hoodia without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant.
  • Do not take Hoodia without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
  • There is no information available regarding the use of Hoodia by children. Do not give any herbal/ health supplement to a child without first talking to the child’s doctor.

How should I take Hoodia?

  • The use of Hoodia in cultural and traditional settings may differ from concepts accepted by current Western medicine. When considering the use of herbal supplements, consultation with a primary health care professional is advisable. Additionally, consultation with a practitioner trained in the uses of herbal/ health supplements may be beneficial, and coordination of treatment among all health care providers involved may be advantageous.
  • Take Hoodia as directed on the package or as directed by your doctor, pharmacist, or other health care provider.

Herbal extracts are among the world’s best studied nutrients and have been researched for years in leading European universities and hospitals. Some have been in clinical use in Europe for decades, with millions of documented cases.

Almost all of what we know as modern day medicine has been derived either directly or indirectly from folk medicine, which relies on herbal treatments. Even today, as much as 80% of the world (four billion people) use herbal supplements as part of their primary health care. Many of the drugs that are commonly used today are herbal in origin. In fact, the Office of Alternative Medicine of the National Institutes of Health reports that about one-fourth of the prescription drugs dispensed in the United States have at least one active ingredient derived from plant material.

Green tea polyphenols are members of flavonoids. Catechins found in green tea have been shown to provide a number of health-promoting benefits:

More about Xenical (Orlistat)

Sep 22
2010

Orlistat is a drug designed to treat obesity. Its primary function is preventing the absorption of fats from the human diet, thereby reducing caloric intake. It is intended for use in conjunction with a physician-supervised reduced-calorie diet. Orlistat is the saturated derivative of lipstatin — a potent natural inhibitor of pancreatic lipases isolated from the bacterium Streptomyces toxytricini. Orlistat works by inhibiting pancreatic lipase, an enzyme that breaks down triglycerides in the intestine. Without this enzyme, triglycerides from the diet are prevented from being hydrolyzed into absorbable free fatty acids and are excreted undigested.

The amount of weight loss achieved with orlistat varies. In one-year clinical trials, between 35.5% and 54.8% of subjects achieved a 5% or greater decrease in body mass, although not all of this mass was necessarily fat. Between 16.4% and 24.8% achieved at least a 10% decrease in body mass. After orlistat was stopped, a significant number of subjects regained weight — up to 35% of the weight they had lost.

What is Alli (Orlistat)?

May 06
2010

In what for many was a surprise, but welcome relief, the US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) have formally endorsed the first weight loss drug to be available over the counter without prescription, named “alli”.  The release of this anti-obesity wonder drug – the Alli Diet Pill - may well have come at the right time with recent reports showing a growing problem in both the European and US markets (with Europe particularly disappointing of late).

While the US has been troubled by obesity for some time, with some 65 percent of adults overweight or obese, the problem is starting to take hold in Europe.  While weight loss pills have attracted some negative comment in the past, the fact the FDA have approved the product offers a great deal of support to many.

The Alli diet pill itself is a reduced strength version of the prescription weight loss drug Xenical (also known as Orlistat) which has an impressive safety record, and encouraging clinical trial results.  In the original trials of Xenical it was shown that when used in conjunction with a traditional weight loss program , the treatment resulted in an average loss of 12.4 pounds over 6 months (the placebo patients only losing half that amount).

What is Hoodia Gordonii?

May 03
2010

Latin Name: Hoodia gordonii
Other Names: hoodia, xhooba, !khoba, Ghaap, hoodia cactus, South African desert cactus

Hoodia (pronounced HOO-dee-ah) is a cactus-like plant that grows primarily in the semi-deserts of South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Angola.

In the last few years, hoodia has been heavily marketed for weight loss and has become immensely popular.

Although there has always been a demand for diet pills, after the ban on the herb ephedra, the market was particularly ripe for the next new diet pill.

Much of hoodia’s popularity stems from claims that the San Bushmen of the Kalahari desert relied on hoodia for thousands of years to ward off hunger and thirst during long hunting trips. They were said to have cut off the stem and eat the bitter-tasting plant.

Hoodia gordonii grows in clumps of green upright stems. Although it is often called a cactus because it resembles one, hoodia is actually a succulent plant.

It takes about five years before hoodia gordonii’s pale purple flowers appear and the plant can be harvested.

There are over 13 types of hoodia. The only active ingredient identified so far is a steroidal glycoside that has been called “p57″. Currently, only hoodia gordonii is thought to contain p57.

What is Slimex (sibutramine 15mg)?

Apr 30
2010

What Slimex (sibutramine 15mg) is used for:

Slimex is used to treat very overweight (obese) patients who have not been able to lose weight using a low calorie diet and exercise.

Your ideal weight may not be achieved even with Slimex . For the best results Slimex should be used in combination with a calorie controlled diet and a regular exercise routine. The intent of Slimex is to assist with moderate weight loss over 6 months (5-10%) – 9 months for diabetics – when used with a diet and exercise programme. This is in accordance with modern weight-loss practice, which emphasises that moderate weight loss achieves significant health improvement. Losing even modest amounts of weight (5-10% of your initial weight) and keeping it off has been found to reduce risks for diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Set yourself realistic goals for weight loss and maintenance.

For best results, Slimex should be used together with a low fat diet and moderate exercise supervised by your doctor. If this is followed, you should notice some weight loss by the end of the first month of treatment. If you have not lost at least 2kg in the first four weeks of treatment, speak to your doctor.

Slimex does not work in the same way as traditional appetite suppressants. It works by altering the level of two chemicals in the brain, serotonin and noradrenaline, which help regulate energy intake and output.

The result is (1) you will not need to eat as much during your meals before you feel full, and (2) Slimex stops your metabolic rate from falling as much as it normally would. Metabolic rate normally falls during weight loss as you reduce your intake of food, making it harder to keep losing weight. However, there will still be fluctuations in your weight loss as the body uses many mechanisms to maintain your weight. This could be a reason some people do not achieve any benefit from Slimex .

Slimex is NOT meant to result in “overnight” weight-loss. A healthy rate of weight-loss is ½ to 1kg per week. Even though some people notice an effect on the size of their meals within a few days, it can take longer for others. Weight loss normally starts within 2 weeks and continues for up to 6 months (although in some people eg diabetics, it could take longer). Once your weight plateaus, continue to take Slimex , which will help sustain weight loss.

Continuing to take Slimex will help you maintain this new lower weight and assist to prevent weight being regained.

Slimex is not addictive or habit forming and has been approved for long-term use in weight management.
